Anti-globalisation protest is best thought of as an umbrella term covering the concerns of a wide range of groups – environmentalists, campaigners for debt relief, human rights activists, and so on. The 1990s saw the emergence of a widespread movement of opposition to globalisation. It is not an easy movement to characterise. It is diffuse, lacking accredited leaders or formal organisation, and economic rather than technological or cultural. Anti-globalisation to a large extent equates with anti-capitalism, activists having made business centres and conferences of global financial institutions the targets of their demonstrations. It equates to some extent also with anti-Americanism, the USA being seen as the architect of the existing international economic order, the lair of the most powerful multi-nationals and the world’s worst polluter. Several demonstrations have ended in violence (for example, London and Seattle, 1999), although it would be wrong to conclude that most anti-globalisation activists support the use of violence.
